September 2007
Metaskil sponsored Ollie Rogers on his mission to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro this summer with five colleagues and to raise funds for good causes.
All the team reached the 19,340ft summit of Africa's highest peak, the highlight of their 10-day visit to Tanzania. Their trip started with a day at St Jude's School in Arusha, which provides education for some of the poorest children in the region. They left them with a kitbag full of rugby equipment provided by the RFU.
After that, came seven days of climbing and coping with extreme heat and cold and lack of oxygen at altitude helped by guides and porters.
Afterwards, the team said "there were a few tears, plenty of hugs when we made it to the top and the odd photo for our generous sponsors Metaskil and the various charities before we stumbled back down the slopes…..Summiting a mountain of that height was a huge personal triumph and as we stood there we were so glad we had made it but adamant we would never, ever do it again!
The team succeeded in raising more than £10,000 for five charities: the Everyman cancer research charity, NSPCC, Scope, the Colin Javens Spinal Injury Trust and Stand Up For Stoke.
